I visited the museum with floats (Yatai) that are listed as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. The museum is located inside Hachiman-gu Sakurayama Shrine. The star attractions- Stunning floats that are true masterpieces, adorned with lacquer, vibrant paintwork, exquisite woodwork, intricate metalwork, and impressive smithery. The size of these floats is astounding! Imagine the Daihachi-Tai with wheels over 1.56 meters and the Hou-ou-tai showcasing a Phoenix with a wingspan of 1.8 meters and height of 8.8 meters!

The best place in Takayama. Might be the craziest place I've been to in my whole life, it makes Don Quijote look like a sterile, modern post office. A must-go if you're in Takayama, and it makes Takayama a must-go if you're in any way a fan of the showa era. As soon as you step through the door and enter what appears like a candy store, but it's the weird old candy your grandpa might have, the kind that predates the internet and might have been made before the invention of expiration dates, it's a complete blast from the past. Astro Boy, city pop, first generation home console video games, this place isn't so much a museum as it is a time capsule in the form of a building. There's a tiny alley with mock storefronts. There's a period classroom, a period barbershop, even a period restaurant. There's an old-timey phonebooth and a car that could have been driven by Brendan Fraser in the Mummy, both of which you can actually enter.

Miyagawa Morning Market is a lovely little spot to explore while visiting Takayama. Although the street isn’t packed with shops or food stalls, the atmosphere is peaceful and welcoming. You’ll find a handful of local vendors selling handmade crafts, fresh produce, and small snacks, which gives the market a more personal and authentic feel. It’s not a place for major shopping, but it’s definitely worth a quick stop to enjoy a quiet stroll along the river and experience a bit of local life. The vendors are friendly, and the setting is clean and well-kept, making it a pleasant way to start your morning in Takayama. If you're already in the area, I’d recommend dropping by for a short visit—it’s a charming part of the town that adds to the overall experience of Takayama.

This is an exceptionally-maintained shrine. It has a clean and well-kept outdoor area, a stall with goshuin, and two museums. The whole place has been designed for tourists. Unusually, the museum exhibits not only have English descriptions but also non-Japanese audio guidance. Please visit this place if you are in Takayama.

Fantastic if you appreciate old architecture and history. It's a really nice place to visit. Lots of restaurants, sake breweries and shopping. I have 4 stars just because I found it way too crowded for my taste. Luckily, there's lots of peaceful and beautiful areas around the area.

The second gondola offers very beautiful views. In the winter I saw snow covered trees and white mountains. At the top there's a viewing deck, a restaurant with pretty nice food especially considering you're on top of a mountain, and some trails for hiking that provide an escape from the crowds. A great experience!

The exposition at Takayama Jinya was bigger than we expected and offered a really interesting glimpse into traditional Japanese interior and architecture. All visitors are asked to remove their shoes at the entrance, place them in a plastic bag, and carry them throughout the visit — something to keep in mind before entering. There’s no rush inside, and several peaceful spots let you sit on tatami mats and enjoy views of the surrounding nature. A calm and enriching experience overall.

Beautiful day spent at the Open Air village. We decided to go here instead of Shirakawago, hoping to be satisfied with what we saw and the quality and beauty of the homes. For a 700¥ entrance fee, instead of a 2500¥ bus ride and additional costs for Shirakawago once there, we were totally satisfied and spent a beautiful 2h visit. We brought our lunch, walked there and ate with the beautiful pond and house view. Highly recommend if you're debating between one of the 2, the house restoration and preservation is beautiful and you can enter many of them and read through many English or Japanese explanations

#MarchGoodPlaces2025 Hida Plaza Hotel is a hotel with its own hot spring. After arriving that evening, we put our luggage away and had dinner in the banquet hall. The exquisite and diverse food was very delicious. After the meal, I took a short rest and went to the rooftop with a few friends to take a hot spring bath. The breakfast dishes are quite rich and delicious. What’s surprising is that we can even eat Hida beef, which is as famous as the three major Wagyu beefs in Japan. Not at all! We went to the Miyagawa Morning Market by the riverside early in the morning. It's an early morning market open from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM, where you can find seasonal fruits, various Takayama snacks, souvenirs, and more. Unlike other markets, it's not crowded, and the peaceful environment made our visit very pleasant. You can buy something to eat and enjoy it slowly while watching the river. I bought a 3-day Nohi Bus pass at Takayama Bus Terminal, which allows unlimited rides on the Takayama Bus Terminal - Shin-Hotaka Ropeway route + a round-trip ride on the Shin-Hotaka Ropeway within 3 days. 🛻Transportation: Take a bus to Fukuji Onsen Station, which is right next to the bus stop. Three private outdoor baths are open in winter, and two of them are open. You don't even need to make a reservation or pay extra for the private bath. You can go for a soak as long as there is no one in the bath. When you enter, turn the sign at the door to "occupied" and lock the door to enjoy your exclusive hot spring village, which includes both indoor and outdoor baths. ❄️Snow scenery: That night, I soaked in the hot spring in the snow, and in the morning, I watched the snow and the sunlight reflecting on the hot spring.
