Turns out — not always! The variant we saw in Kota Kinabalu didn’t have a strong scent at all, just a faint musty smell. We visited the Tambunan Rafflesia Information Centre, you can hire a local guide (recommended) as you probably will not be able to find the flower. The guide was friendly and very knowledgeable, we asked her a lot of questions and she gave us a lot of insights on the flower! Depending on the season, the hike to the bloom varies — the one we did was about 30 minutes downhill to the furthest point. Not too tough, but wear proper shoes (might be slippery if it’s raining) Added a photo of what a Rafflesia looks like after it dies — it only blooms for a few days before wilting and turning into this dark, cabbage looking thing😅 📞 Pro tip: Call the center beforehand to check if the flower is blooming and how long the hike will be — it changes based on the time of year. Visiting Information: You need to pay an entrance fee to enter the University of Sabah, which is RM10 per person. The mosque is open from 08:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and from 08:00 to 16:00 on weekends and holidays. Therefore, it is also recommended that friends who arrive in the morning on red-eye flights can find a Chinese driver to pick up the airport and take everyone to the city for breakfast and walk around the city. This is a very good choice. At least you have a basic understanding of the city of Kota Kinabalu. After lunch, check in to the hotel at the right time. I met a good driver who was a part-time tour guide. He took me to the University of Sabah, the Floating Mosque, the Municipal Building, etc., and introduced me to local restaurants. The best thing is that he could exchange Malaysian ringgit for me without sacrificing the real-time exchange rate. It was really conscientious. Check in to the hotel in the afternoon and take a short rest. In the evening, strolling around the night market in the city is also a relief. Day2 In the morning, I chartered a car with a couple to go to the Rafflesia base. I was lucky to see four or five Rafflesias. In the afternoon, I rushed to Magellan Pier to book a ticket to the Kawaka mangrove ferry. You must remember to bargain. Can the mangroves be piled up? The most exciting part is watching fireflies at night, which is particularly spectacular. Day 3 You can book water activities and snorkeling on the surrounding islands. After purchased ticket from the counter then walk in freely and enjoy the nature all the way to the waterfall. First time here to explore the natural wind from the waterfall. And the weathered rock just felt the years of edification. This place is a hidden gem. We went here to enjoy the waterfall, have some lunch, and swim. Swimming in the fresh, cold water and going under the waterfalls was exhilarating! The nature around is beautiful. Do note it takes around 10 minutes of walking along the stream to get to the waterfall. Payment is only cashless!
