The Peaceful Arita Town

Getting there: You may take limited express trains from Fukuoka's Hakata Station to Arita Station. The journey will take around 90minutes. Highlights: Arita is a small town in western Saga that is famous throughout Japan for its pottery, known as Arita-yaki. The history of Arita-yaki dates back about 400 years, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi attempted to invade Korea and brought back several highly skilled Korean craftsmen to Japan. In 1616, one of these craftsmen discovered kaolin - the mineral required to make porcelain - at the site which later became the Izumiyama Quarry. Consequently, Arita became the first place in Japan to produce porcelain. #passionpassport #japan #traveljapan
