Aso Shrine 3083-1 Miyaji, Ichinomiya-machi, Aso-shi, Kumamoto 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM 0967-22-0064 Aso Shrine is an ancient shrine with over 2,000 years of history, enshrining 12 family deities including Takeiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, the grandson of Emperor Jimmu who first developed the Aso region. The shrine's pavilion complex was rebuilt between 1835 (Tenpo 6) and 1850 (Kaei 3) through donations from the Kumamoto Domain. Six structures, including the main sanctuary and the two-story Romon gate, are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The Romon gate boasts the largest scale in Kyushu and is celebrated as one of the "Three Great Romon Gates of Japan." During the 2016 (Heisei 28) Kumamoto earthquakes, the shrine suffered catastrophic damage, resulting in the collapse of the Important Cultural Property Romon gate and the worship hall. However, the massive restoration project was officially completed in December 2023 (Reiwa 5).
