If the schedule is even tighter, it's not a pity to just transfer to the South Island. Although the photos may look good, the city of Auckland doesn't have much appeal. Overall, Auckland is more expensive than the South Island, and the city is not as tidy as Christchurch or Queenstown, with a worse experience on rainy days.
