Bamburgh Church and New Palace

The New Residence (Neue Residenz) was the first large palace built in Franconia during the absolutist era. Until 1802 it was the seat of the Prince-Bishop of Bamberg. The two Renaissance wings at the rear, with their arcades enclosing the inner courtyard, were first built in 1604-1612. The two Baroque wings on the Cathedral Square were designed by Leonhard Dientzenhofer and subsequently built by Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn from 1697-1703. The unified pattern of the facade is typical of Austro-Bohemian Baroque architecture from the late 17th century. Today, the new residence and the rose garden are under the responsibility of the Bavarian Palace Ministry. Important interiors from the 17th and 18th centuries can be seen in the State Rooms, which are open to the public. One of the highlights is the Imperial Hall, with frescoes dating from 1709 and painted by Melchior Steidi. Part of the tour also includes masterpieces of Old German paintings and European Baroque art from the Bavarian State Painting Collection, which was installed on the side of the residence in 1965 by the Bamberg State Library. 🇩🇪
