Just back from Baoding, and my perspective on spending has been shattered

Baoding in September completely maxed out my travel expectations 🍁! But honestly, coming here without a plan is a recipe for disaster. September is the mini-peak season before the real rush, so chain hotels cost around 150–220 yuan/night, and mid-range guesthouses are 200–300 yuan/night. I stayed at the Wuduo Hotel (Zhili Governor-General's Office West Street branch), which starts at 251 yuan—the zero-pressure mattress was amazing. I don't recommend staying in the remote parts of Jingxiu District just to save money. You'll have to take a taxi just to get a donkey meat burger at night, and the cab fare will cost as much as upgrading your room—it's just silly 😅. If you're going to Baishishan or Yesanpo for two days, book a guesthouse near the scenic area. Laiyuan County town is 120–200 yuan/night, and mountain-view guesthouses are 200–400 yuan/night, so you won't have to rush to see the sunrise the next day~ 🍜 Food is the soul of Baoding, and I gained three pounds before I even arrived. The donkey meat burger is Baoding's culinary calling card! Baoding, historically known as Zhili, has a food scene full of local carb-heavy snacks. You'll find the famous donkey meat burgers, as well as century-old steamed buns and beef soup with shredded pancakes hidden in the old streets. The savory donkey meat burger at Yanjia Donkey Meat Restaurant is 13 yuan. The bun is baked and then deep-fried, making it golden and crispy. One bite of the tender, juicy donkey meat paired with a 16-yuan bowl of donkey offal soup is an incredible value 🤤. Beef soup with shredded pancakes is also a must-eat. It features a rich beef bone broth layered with thin pancakes and tender beef—it's fresh, savory, and oily, costing about 18–28 yuan per person. Baiyunzhang Steamed Buns is a century-old halal intangible cultural heritage. The skin is thin and doesn't break when steamed, and the beef and lamb filling is seasoned with a secret recipe. It's juicy, savory, and rich without any gamey taste, costing about 30 yuan per basket. The main store on Yuhua Road is a game-changer. If you want a proper meal, Zhili official cuisine like Li Hongzhang stew, Governor's tofu, and braised pork knuckle costs about 40–50 yuan per person—the rich, savory sauce is perfect with rice. For souvenirs, bring back some Huaimao pickles. They're fermented in century-old vats, making them crispy, tender, salty, and sweet—perfect with a donkey meat burger. 🏔 Attraction recommendations: what's worth it and what's not. Sneakers and a light jacket are the bare minimum; it's several degrees colder on the mountain than in the city, and you won't have fun if you're freezing 🥶. Yesanpo Bailixia admission is 100 yuan. The karst canyons are stunning, and the newly opened cave rafting is 50 yuan/person—super exciting, and the stream water is refreshing after climbing 294 steps. Yishui Lake admission + boat ticket is 135 yuan. It's known as the "Little Guilin of the North." Mount Langya is currently listed as temporarily closed, so don't make a wasted trip. For Baishishan and Yesanpo, I recommend driving yourself or booking a legitimate one-day tour. Prices on the mountain are high, so bringing your own water and snacks will save you some money. For Baiyangdian, definitely don't take private boats on the side of the road; go to the official pier to buy tickets. For the Western Qing Tombs, don't trust the "low-price tour guides" on the side of the road. Many are unlicensed, illegal guides who make up history and take you to shopping spots—it's a total scam. For food, choose old restaurants that locals frequent and avoid the overpriced tourist traps. Yanjia, Sanchun, and Baijia Beef Soup have been open for decades and won't steer you wrong. A 3-day trip can be very comfortable for 1,000 yuan per person: 300 for accommodation + 170 for tickets + 240 for food + 200 for transportation. It's unbeatable in terms of value around Hebei.
