Dazang Monastery is located directly north of Maerkang County in Sichuan, about 680 kilometers from Chongqing, situated in the deep mountains at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. The monastery was built by Awang Zhaba (a disciple of Tsongkhapa) and was the last of the 108 monasteries he constructed in his lifetime. 'Dazang' means 'perfect faith' in Tibetan.
