Steampunk industrial wonderland

On the western outskirts of Beijing is the model of urban industrial regeneration - Shougang Park. Operating as a huge steel production complex for decades until 2010 when it was decommissioned and developed into a funky urban environment including the 2022 Winter Olympics “Big Air” jump. The hotels, retail and office buildings out here are built using parts and leftover structures from industry history. Huge industrial structures like the steel mill’s blast furnaces have been preserved largely in original form and repurposed as urban playgrounds - you can get a lift to the top of one of the biggest blast furnaces in the #couplestrip world. Lots of great shops out here, fun things to do and see, restaurants and breweries/brewpubs. You are guaranteed a fun day or weekend out here. Have a drink in Shangrila lobby - the hotel is built out of the old power station with the cooling towers still standing beside it!!! Easy to get out here by train or didi. Friends of mine even ride their bikes from central Beijing. We stayed at one of the Holiday Inn Expresses out here, right near Shang Brew (Shangrila brewery). Recommend!!!
