About the design concept: In the 16th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign, in the southwest corner of the Palace of Heavenly Purity, Emperor Kangxi set up a special “Nan Study” in order to discuss academic matters, compose poems and paint with the poets of the Hanlin Academy. The renovated design imagines the space of Jiabinxuan as the concept of Southern Study, where there are classics, historical collections, music, chess, calligraphy and painting. It is a unique place. Imagine being in the Southern Study, with the smoke of incense burning nearby and the lush greenery of the garden in the distance. The shadows of the window frames are cast on the stone pavement, and red pomegranates are hung on the trees. These movie-like scenes reappear in the space here in an artistic way. The corridor outside the study turned black and white due to the sunlight, and the columns looked mottled and weathered due to the passage of time. Using columns as design elements, traditional column bases are combined with modern elements to create an interesting column that is presented on the wall as a painting - this is not only a tribute to ancient architecture, but also an interesting attempt at modern design.
