Wandering through its vast expanse, I felt a sense of tranquility and relaxation, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. Every step revealed a picturesque view, and with few visitors around, the garden offered a serene retreat back to nature. Dashuifa: Ruins of History in the Sunset Glow Dashuifa, part of the Western-style buildings in Yuanmingyuan, was once the most magnificent European-style fountain landscape. Though severely damaged during the invasion of the Eight-Nation Alliance, it now stands as a poignant reminder of history. Under the sunset glow, the ruins exude a unique charm. The stone niche-like structure, resembling a doorway, and the once-grand seven-tiered water curtain formed by lion-head fountains are no longer functional, yet the imagination of their former glory remains vivid. The oval chrysanthemum-shaped fountain pool below, with its central bronze deer and ten bronze dogs, now stands silently, as if narrating tales of the past. The sunset's light accentuates the weathered sculptures, evoking a deep sense of the passage of time and the weight of history. Western-style Buildings: Elegance of European Gardens in the Sunset The Western-style buildings, China's first attempt at constructing a European-style garden, include over ten structures and courtyards such as Xieqiqu, Huanghuazhen, Yangquelong, Fangwaiguan, Haiyantang, Yuanyingguan, Dashuifa, Guanshuifa, Xianfashan, and Xianfahua. Crafted primarily from white marble, with intricately carved surfaces and glazed tile roofs, these buildings cover an area of about 7 hectares. As the sunset's rays illuminate these structures, the white marble and glazed tiles radiate a soft, warm glow. Despite the ravages of time, the buildings retain their elegance and refinement. Walking among them feels like stepping back in time to the Qing Dynasty's Qianlong era, a period of cultural fusion between East and West. Fuhai: Majestic Imperial Garden Meets Natural Charm Fuhai, a vast water body within Yuanmingyuan, epitomizes the grandeur of imperial gardens and the allure of natural beauty. At dusk, the sunset's glow reflects off the shimmering waters, creating a dynamic painting. Surrounding trees, flowerbeds, and palaces cast their reflections onto the lake, forming a dreamlike scene. Strolling along the lake's edge, I was enveloped in a sense of peace and beauty. Occasionally, a few water birds would glide across the surface, breaking the stillness and adding a touch of vitality. During my visit to Yuanmingyuan, I was deeply moved by the unique charm of this imperial garden. It offers not only exquisite landscapes and majestic architecture but also a rich historical and cultural heritage. Every step unveils a new view, and every corner invites lingering admiration. Especially during the tranquil sunset hours, with few visitors around, the garden felt like it belonged solely to me.
