The best conditions for seeing many stars are 1. a moonless day, 2. a cloudless day, and 3. no surrounding light (the more local ger camps without electricity, the more stars there are in the night sky.) I saw plenty of stars even when I went to a regular tourist camp. Lantern photos are a must.
