Cannes is a city in the Alpes-Maritimes department on the French Riviera. It is also the host city of the annual Cannes Film Festival, the Marché International du Disque et de l'Édition Musicale and the Cannes International Festival of Creativity. The city is known for its association with the rich and famous, its luxurious hotels and restaurants, and its many conferences. The themes of the high-end hotels here are almost all related to the film festival, because almost every high-end hotel has hosted famous movie stars, directors or screenwriters from various periods. Although most of the elements you encounter when traveling to Cannes are modern, in fact, this is an authentic ancient city. It can be traced back to the 2nd century BC, when the Ligurian Oxbi established a fishing village called Aegina here, which was used as a port of call between the Lerins Islands. In the 10th century the area was known as Kanua, a name probably derived from a type of reed called "canna". The Roman tombs discovered later here indicate that a Roman outpost once existed on Mount Lesuquet (left side of Figure 1). Le Souquet has an 11th-century tower overlooking the marshes where the city now stands. Most of the ancient activities, especially conservation, took place in the Lérins Islands and the history of Cannes is closely linked to that of these islands. A Saracen offensive in 891, which lasted until the end of the tenth century, destroyed the city-states around Canua. The insecurity in the Lerins Islands forced the monks to settle in Le Souquet on the mainland. The city then known as Cannes was fortified by the construction of a castle in 1035, and at the end of the 11th century construction began on two towers on the island of Lérins, one of which took a century to build. Around 1530, Cannes became independent from the church that had controlled the city for hundreds of years. In the 18th century, both the Spanish and the British tried to control the Lérins Islands but were driven away by the French. The islands were later controlled by various people, such as Jean-Honoré Alziari and the Bishop of Fréjus. They had many different uses: in the mid-19th century, one of them served as a hospital for soldiers wounded in the Crimean War. Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, bought land west of Le Souquet and built a villa named after his daughter Elonore-Louise, who died before the foundation stone was laid. The baron's work to improve living conditions attracted the English nobility, who also built winter residences. At the end of the 19th century, several railways were built, prompting the arrival of trams. In Cannes, projects such as Avenue Carnot and Rue d'Antibes were implemented. After the closure of the Hotel Gallia, a luxury hotel was built for wealthy winter clients. In the 20th century, new luxury hotels such as the Carlton, Majestic, Martinez and JW Marriott Cannes were built. The city was modernized and had a sports center, a post office, and a school. After World War I, the number of British and German tourists decreased, but the number of Americans increased. Winter tourism gave way to summer tourism, and the Summer Casino in Palm Beach was built. In 1931, Karan Singh, the Crown Prince of Jammu and Kashmir, was born at the Martinez Hotel. The first Cannes Film Festival was originally scheduled to be held at the Municipal Casino Auditorium from September 1 to 20, 1939, but the festival was cancelled due to the German invasion of Poland on September 1 and the eventual outbreak of World War II. Shortly after World War II, the city council had the idea of ​​hosting an international film festival, which finally opened on September 20, 1946 after a seven-year delay.
