A truly clear and beautiful lake of "Lake Shikotsu Blue"

Lake Shikotsu is a caldera lake formed by the eruption of the Shikotsu volcano about 40,000 years ago. The name comes from "shi-kot," which means "large depression" in Ainu! A precious water source for Chitose. It is a long lake from east to west, with a long axis of 13 km and a short axis of 5 km, a circumference of about 40 km, a maximum depth of about 360 m, and an average depth of about 265 m. It is the northernmost ice-free lake in Japan, the second deepest after Lake Tazawa in Akita Prefecture.
