Luohan Temple in Chongqing | The Right Way to Visit, According to Locals!

Calling it an internet-famous spot feels disrespectful to its thousand-year history, yet it has been a popular destination for pilgrims for centuries! The most unique aspect of Luohan Temple is its location. While most historical temples are nestled deep in the mountains, this one is surrounded by Chongqing's central business district, separated only by a wall. Inside, the sound of chanting fills the air, and a single door shuts out the hustle and bustle of the outside world, creating a true urban oasis. Originally built in 1064 during the Zhi Ping reign of the Northern Song Dynasty, Luohan Temple is a genuine thousand-year-old temple, famed for its 524 statues of Arhats. The temple's notable attractions include the 20-meter-tall Ancient Buddha Rock (similar in style to Dazu Rock Carvings) and the awe-inspiring 524 Arhat statues. Today, Luohan Temple is not only a significant Buddhist site but also a spiritual sanctuary for locals.
