Freiburg

Cross the bridge over the Rhine River at the Franco-German border, and a few dozen kilometers to the west you will reach the medieval city of Freiburg, located in the southern part of Germany, belonging to the state of Baden-Württemberg. It is at the southernmost tip of the Black Forest and is also the warmest city in Germany. It is surrounded by dense forests, has a comfortable climate, and picturesque scenery. The University of Freiburg was founded during the Renaissance, an ancient medieval university. The old town of this ancient city is well-preserved, and even today you can still find medieval buildings and ancient stories along the cobblestone streets in the old town. Freiburg Cathedral, built in the 11th century from red sandstone, still stands in the center of the old town. At the entrance of the cathedral, there are sculptures depicting scenes from the Bible. Next to the cathedral is the Merchants' Hall from the early 16th century, which is colorful and distinctive. The Old Town Hall, with its mosaic markings on the ground nearly 900 years old, has now become a tourist information center. The New Town Hall is right next to it and can be entered. Opposite is the medieval Martin's Church, which was severely damaged during World War II, and what you see now is a reconstruction, said to be built in a modern ascetic style. When we arrived, a couple was getting married; after completing the marriage registration at the town hall, they held the wedding in the church, which was very lively. The old town still retains two medieval city gates, Martin's Gate and Schwabentor, both of which are well-maintained. Next to the old city is a lush green hill with a cable car that can take you to the top for a panoramic view. There is a trail out of Schwabentor for hiking, and from the viewing platform, you can take in the entire view of Freiburg's old town. There are also the Augustinian Museum and the Archaeological Museum, which are very popular with different types of visitors. The old city is not large, and one day is enough to see it all, as the attractions are very concentrated and within walking distance. If you are looking to find medieval architecture or historical stories, they are indeed everywhere. Don't miss it as you pass by; it will definitely not disappoint you. Sorry for not having beautiful photos to show due to the rain, but please make do with these few.
