Fujiyoshida – Gateway to Fuji’s Sacred Side

#cityplaybook #familytrip #localguides #stunningview Post: Nestled at the foot of Japan’s most iconic peak, Fujiyoshida is more than just a vantage point for Mount Fuji—it’s a soulful city where tradition, nature, and quiet devotion converge. Unlike the more commercialized Fuji Five Lakes area, Fujiyoshida offers a deeper, more intimate connection to the mountain and the culture that surrounds it. My journey started at the stunning Chureito Pagoda, perched high above the city. The climb up the 400 steps was well worth it for that postcard-perfect view: the red pagoda, cherry blossoms in bloom, and Mount Fuji standing silently in the distance. It was a moment of pure stillness. Down in the city, I wandered the atmospheric Honcho Street, where vintage shops, old eateries, and retro signs line the quiet road leading directly toward Fuji. The mountain looms large at the end of the street—so close it feels like you could reach out and touch it. I also visited Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, an ancient forested sanctuary that marks the historic starting point of pilgrimages up Mount Fuji. Towering cedar trees and weathered stone lanterns line the mossy paths. It felt sacred—grounded and timeless. For lunch, I tried Yoshida udon, a local specialty known for its thick, chewy noodles and bold miso-soy broth. Served in a humble shop with wooden benches and hand-painted menus, it was hearty, flavorful, and full of local character. Best Time to Visit: April for cherry blossoms at Chureito Pagoda, or October–November for vibrant fall foliage. Early mornings offer the clearest views of Fuji. Helpful Tips: Bring good walking shoes—some of the best views require a bit of a climb. Stay overnight for a chance to see Fuji at sunrise, glowing in soft pink hues. Check out Fujiyoshida’s Mt. Fuji Station, which has a rooftop view deck and Fuji-themed souvenirs.
