Few things feel more rejuvenating than easing into natural hot spring waters with cool mountain air on your face. From there, I took the Hakone Ropeway over volcanic valleys and rising steam—Owakudani was like stepping onto another planet. I tried the famous black eggs boiled in the sulfur-rich springs, said to add seven years to your life! A highlight was cruising across Lake Ashi on a replica pirate ship, the water still and reflective under a wide sky. When the clouds parted, Mount Fuji appeared—majestic and humbling in the distance. The Hakone Open-Air Museum surprised me with its blend of sculpture, nature, and playfulness. Massive art installations sit against a backdrop of mountains and trees, with works by Picasso, Henry Moore, and local talents scattered across the grounds. Winding down, I explored the Old Tokaido Road, a path once walked by samurai and travelers centuries ago. The towering cedar trees and moss-covered stones made it feel like walking through living history. Best Time to Visit: October–November for colorful autumn foliage, or spring (March–May) for clear skies and cherry blossoms. Winter also offers clear views of Fuji and cozy onsen stays.
