The Vietnam Temple of Literature, officially known as the Temple of Literature - Imperial Academy (Văn Miếu-Quốc Tử Giám), is a traditional Confucian temple building on the west side of Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi. During major festivals or when students are taking entrance exams, students and their parents come to the Confucian Temple to worship Confucius and pray for good grades. There are also many men and women wearing Ao Dai in the Confucian Temple, who come to check in and take photos. The Hanoi Temple of Confucianism was first built in 1070 AD by Emperor Thang Long of the Ly Dynasty under the order of Ly Nhat Ton. It was originally a place for Zhou Gong and Confucius to be worshipped, as well as for the descendants of the royal family to study. In 1076, Ly Nhan Tong established the Imperial Academy next to the Temple of Confucianism. After going through the evolution of various dynasties, it became the highest institution of learning in Vietnam.
