#100 Ways to Travel There are 12 castles in Japan that were built before the Edo period and have a "tomb tower", and Himeji Castle is one of them. The Great Castle in the southeast is connected to the Nishi-ko Castle, the Kan (meaning northwest) Ko Castle, and the Higashi-ko Castle to form a "connected castle tower" that was completed in 1609 during the early Edo period. Himeji Castle is known as the pinnacle of modern castle architecture and was designated as a "National Treasure" of Japan in 1931. In addition to the four castle towers, the castle also has numerous gates, "turrets" (watchtowers connecting the castle towers), stone walls, etc. The layout is intricate and the view varies depending on the angle you look at it from.
