Phoenix Mountain has the most beautiful sunrise in Hong Kong. At the beginning of the new year, we suddenly remembered the romance between me and the mountains, so we took advantage of the slightly warmer weather in the past few days and climbed up Hong Kong’s second highest mountain, Phoenix Mountain (934 meters above sea level), in the dark early in the morning on the weekend. Ngong Ping was particularly quiet at around 5 a.m., with no one around. Starting from Ngong Ping Village, you will pass Po Lin Monastery and the long staircase connecting to the Tian Tan Buddha, and continue towards the Ngong Ping Campground. Finally, you will pass the Heart Sutra Forest and see a wooden sign that reads "Phoenix Viewing Sunrise", which is the entrance to Phoenix Mountain. Whether starting from Ngong Ping or Pak Kong Au, both are popular routes to climb Phoenix Mountain. We have walked this route several times, but we always did it during the day, so the experience of climbing the mountain in the dark this time was really completely different. For many people, walking in the mountains at night is always a bit mysterious, even eerie and scary, but you will get used to it after walking a few times. Furthermore, compared to the huge crowds during the day, sometimes you can enjoy the silence at night. There happened to be a full moon on the day of climbing, and the moonlight shone on the hiking trail, so there was no need to use the headlamp we had prepared. After passing the wooden sign of "Phoenix Sun Viewing", there is a relatively flat mountain road first, and then you start to set foot on the endless ladder. It takes about 1 hour to reach the summit. If you are not in good physical condition, it would be more sufficient to reserve 1.5 hours, otherwise you will miss the sunrise and cry without tears. The stairs to Phoenix Mountain are also quite steep, so it is helpful to bring hiking sticks with you. Especially when going down the mountain, I felt that my knees were silently protesting with every step I took. You will reach Zhanchaiao in about 30 minutes. Don’t think that the mission is completed here, because the top of Phoenix Mountain is still on the left.
