Flying Rainbow Tower at Guangsheng Temple

Located in Guangsheng Temple, Hongdong County, Shanxi Province, the Flying Rainbow Tower is a glazed pagoda that dates back to the Eastern Han Dynasty. It has been rebuilt multiple times, with its current structure completed between the 10th year of the Zhengde reign and the 6th year of the Jiajing reign during the Ming Dynasty. This tower is a representative masterpiece of glazed pagodas in China and holds the Guinness World Record as the tallest multicolored glazed pagoda in the world. We arrived in the afternoon, and under the pure, dazzling sunlight of southern Shanxi, the pagoda suddenly appeared before us, radiant and colorful, resembling a "flying rainbow." From the surrounding gallery to the spire, the entire tower is adorned with glazed components in five colors: yellow, green, blue, white, and ochre. The intricate designs of coiling dragons, dancing phoenixes, powerful warriors, and auspicious beasts are vivid and lifelike, with vibrant colors that captivate the eye. It's hard to believe that this pagoda has stood for over 500 years, surviving an 8.0 magnitude earthquake during the Kangxi era, yet remains perfectly intact. This site was used as a filming location for the 1986 TV adaptation of "Journey to the West" in the episode "Tang Monk Sweeps the Pagoda to Resolve a Strange Case," as well as for the game "Black Myth: Wukong." Seeing it in person is truly an unforgettable experience.
