2024 Cultural 'Summer' Journey (II): Huai'an Museum

Huai'an Museum is an important window showcasing the historical and cultural heritage of Huai'an. The museum houses a rich collection of artifacts and artworks, ranging from ancient ceramics to modern calligraphy and paintings. Each piece reflects the deep historical and cultural roots of Huai'an. Here, one can gain an in-depth understanding of the historical changes and cultural development of Huai'an. The current main exhibition at Huai'an Museum is titled 'National Historical and Cultural City - Huai'an,' which is divided into seven sections: The Dawn of Civilization, Chu Charm and Han Style, The Key to the North and South, The Hub of Canal Transport, The Important Salt Gate, The Key to River Management, and The Emergence of Heroes. These sections highlight the local cultural heritage. Notable among the exhibits are the inscribed bronze artifacts, bronze chariot fittings, and a double-chimney primitive porcelain censer with a lid from the Warring States period, unearthed from the Gaozhuang Warring States Tomb in 1978; the modern calligraphy and paintings donated by Mr. Xu Bopu in 1984; and the wooden drum cart unearthed from the Warring States Tomb in Canal Village in 2004. The Gaozhuang Warring States Tomb was excavated in 1978 in Gaozhuang, Chengnan Township, Qingpu District, Huai'an City. This tomb is the first large pre-Qin tomb discovered in northern Jiangsu. The wooden drum cart from the Warring States Tomb in Canal Village is a national first-class cultural relic. The bronze yi (a type of vessel) displayed in Huai'an Museum, unearthed from the Gaozhuang Warring States Tomb in Huaiyin, has scenes from the 'Classic of Mountains and Seas' inscribed on its inner wall. This is currently the earliest known artifact in China depicting deities, birds, and beasts from the 'Classic of Mountains and Seas.' Be sure not to miss it when you visit!
