Facing the sea, this memorial hall feels like you're on a ship. This is a place where you can learn about the stories of students who risked their lives to contribute to the modernization of Japan. I found it very interesting because I only knew about famous people in Japanese history, such as Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, when I heard about the Satsuma domain. During the period of national isolation, the Satsuma students risked their lives to stow away to England to learn technology and bring a new civilization to Japan. I personally found it very interesting to think that we are where we are today because of the passion and challenges of people who wanted to learn even at the risk of risk, such as Mori Arinori, who later became the first Minister of Education, Nagasawa Tei, who was called the "Grape King" for successfully brewing wine in California, and Murahashi Hisanari, who founded the Hokkaido Development Agency Sapporo Beer Brewery, the predecessor of today's Sapporo Beer.
