Santa Ana - volcano and more

Guatemala and El Salvador are known for their volcanos, attracting hoards of hikers. For me I didn’t want the multi day treks so the Santa Ana volcano hike was perfect for me - it’s basically a half a day experience, paths are well marked, super safe, quite manageable. At the top of the Santa Ana volcano you will of course see the sulphur crater lake, but because El Salvador has such a high density of volcanoes you get to see a number of neighbouring ones too right next to the Santa Ana peak. Most Santa Ana volcano experiences will bundle up a stop by Lake Coatepeque. Pretty. 7-8 out of 10, but not mind blowing either. As to Santa Ana town itself, it is a lovely colonial town but aesthetically less appealing and physically less well maintained than say Antigua. But since we are already at Santa Ana may as well just check out the church the town square and other old buildings. And yes now you are in El Salvador do not miss out on the pupusas! They are quite good and apart from Honduras I don’t think you are supposed to find them as a local delicacy in the rest of latam.
