D.T. Suzuki Museum

Located in the serene and tranquil city center of Kanazawa, the D.T. Suzuki Museum is dedicated to the renowned Buddhist philosopher Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki, who was born in Kanazawa. Suzuki traveled extensively around the world, embodying the spirit of a cultured and leisurely traveler. While he might remind some of the wealthy grandfather from the Suzuki Group in the Detective Conan series, Suzuki was less ostentatious and more refined. The museum's design was crafted by Yoshio Taniguchi, a foreign architect based in Kanazawa. The structure is composed of reinforced concrete and partial steel-frame elements, featuring a single-story building and a two-story warehouse. Set against the backdrop of the sloping greenery of Kodatsuno Plateau, the museum utilizes stone walls and water features to create a landscape symbolic of Kanazawa. Within this landscape, the world of D.T. Suzuki is beautifully represented. The architectural layout includes an Entrance Garden, Outdoor Garden, and Water Mirror Garden, connected by corridors that link the Entrance Building, Exhibition Building, and Contemplative Space Building. Visitors can stroll through these three buildings and gardens, gaining insights, learning, and reflecting on the philosophy and legacy of D.T. Suzuki. The space is highly photogenic, offering a sense of ethereal solitude whether viewed from the inside or outside. The atmosphere varies beautifully between sunny and cloudy days. Admission fee: ¥310.
