Nara｜Longyama Inari Shrine: A Guardian of Japan's Origins Older Than Kashihara Shrine

If Kashihara Shrine is the site where Japan's first emperor ascended the throne and a place of worship, then the guardian of Japan's origins is the hidden Longyama Inari Shrine. This shrine predates Kashihara Shrine and has been cherished by the locals of Kashihara for its blessings of abundant harvests and commercial prosperity. The main deities worshipped here are Ukanomitama, the god of food, commonly known as Inari Okami; Toyouke-hime, also known as Toyouke Okami; and Omiyame, the goddess who protects the palace's peace. Built along a hillside, the torii gates lead you step by step into the realm of the gods. This secluded shrine dedicated to three goddesses is nestled beside Fukada Pond. Surrounded by dense trees, it is easy to miss. Unlike the grandeur of Kashihara Shrine, Longyama Inari Shrine is understated and simple, yet its efficacy draws continuous worshippers. Outside the shrine, the approach coincides with a large pottery market, showcasing exquisite ceramics from all over Japan. Interestingly, Kashihara City has collaborated with Street Fighter, and sculptures inspired by the game can be found scattered around the streets.
