The Bayview Hotel Langkawi is a dated, mid-range property that attracts both couples and families, despite that there's little for kids to do on-site. The lobby is outfitted with attractive marble flooring and wooden benches, but the dozens of tiny and larger Malaysian flags are cheesy. The rest of the common areas are furnished with worn, old-fashioned decor, such as the Flamingo Restaurant's various patterns and colors in the armchairs, carpet, and drapery. The outdoor pool is simple and showing age, but it has lovely sea views and potted plants lining the perimeter. The vibe is generally relaxed, though the Woodpecker Lounge is a fun, casual place for guests to catch live entertainment. Note that smoking is not allowed on-site. #createwithtrip

Ambong Ambong is a quiet, four-pearl resort hotel that attracts travelers from around the world. The lobby is housed in a simple stand-alone building up a flight of stairs, and features dark-wood floors, a few red Chinese lanterns, and big windows that let in lots of natural light filtered through the property's abundant jungle greenery. A small bar sits off to one side and there are a couple of casual seating ares with low chairs and coffee tables for guests to hang out. Navigating the hilly resort might prove difficult for travelers with compromised mobility (although a driver is available for those who need help getting around). Children under 12 are not allowed, and most of the guests here are vacationing couples. #createwithtrip

The Bon Ton Resort has just eight stand-alone wooden villas amid lush grounds that include a lotus lagoon, making it feel private and a bit like a residence. The hotel doubles as an animal sanctuary, so there will be cats and dogs roaming the grounds, which is just another way the place feels like home. Couples are attracted to the charm and romantic ambience of the place, plus the 100-year-old rooms are filled with rustic yet stylish furnishings. This chic design also carries over into the restaurant, bars, and common areas. Guests can expect lots of open-air, wood-beam structures, colorful rugs and throw pillows, hand-carved benches, and decorative sculptures and floor vases. #createwithtrip

The Holiday Villa Beach Resort & Spa attracts even numbers of families and couples with an excellent location and plenty of amenities on-site. The hotel is largely dated throughout, with some well-worn furnishings, though some locally inspired accents add charm. The busy lobby has hand-carved couches, colorful stained glass, red, patterned area rugs, and dangling ivy. Quirky touches include a giant chess board, dozens of tiny Malaysian flags, and a water fountain topped with a fish. Restaurants and bars have varying style, from charming red-checkered tablecloths and brick walls in Lagenda Coffee House, to bright green and orange retro chairs in the Matahari Lounge. Travelers more interested in the gorgeous beach and pretty pools are likely fine to overlook the outdated design, but it's worth noting that some guests have reported unpleasant smells in various public areas and rooms. #createwithtrip

The Tanjung Rhu Resort is a stand-out property for its sleek, contemporary design and stunning setting along a wide stretch of beach with views of the Andaman Sea. Since the hotel is well-removed from the town center and surrounded by lush grounds, most guests are seeking a quiet place to relax. There are still ample facilities to keep guests occupied, however, from the three impressive swimming pools and spa, to the water sports and dining venues. The contemporary design consists primarily of neutral tones, with lots of wood, open-air structures, and chic white-cushioned seating. There are numerous spots to lounge or walk among the lily ponds and palm trees. The resort is undergoing renovations to some areas -- certain room categories, the kids' club, and Rhu Restaurant -- but they're scheduled to be finished in 2017 and guests report that it doesn't disturb their stay. #createwithtrip

The two-and-a-half-pearl Tropical Resort lives up to its name. Beautiful, well-manicured trees surround the hotel and a variety of potted plants and seating are placed across the property. A charming sunlit coffee house has stocked bookshelves and opens up to the gardens with more space for guests to lounge. The decor throughout is simple and more contemporary that the average budget hotel. The restaurant, for example, has a mix of wooden and black-wicker tables and chairs topped with small potted plants, and floor-to-ceiling windows with garden views. There's little to entertain kids, but this is a great option for couples in search of a relaxing beach vacation at an affordable price. #createwithtrip

The Aseania Resort & Spa Langkawi Island has pretty grounds featuring waterfalls, palm trees, and colored lights at night. Interiors, however, are dated throughout and many furnishings are showing their age. While the lobby's spiral wooden staircase, marble flooring, and high ceiling are pleasant, the bright-red lanterns clash and white faux-leather armchairs are tired. Most areas of the property continue this neutral-tone design with pops of maroon and red. Families are generally keen to overlook this outdated vibe for the quality kid-friendly features, such as the mini water park with waterslides and a long, meandering pool. There's also live entertainment most nights that include dancing and singing. #createwithtrip

The Adya Hotel Langkawi opened in January 2015, which means all areas are contemporary and more furnishings are in good condition -- though there's some minor wear. Though the Adya is an Islamic concept, guests are both Muslim and non-Muslim, and split evenly between couples and families. The design throughout consists of primarily neutral-tone decor, with occasionally pops of yellow, orange, and red. Keeping with the theme, the hotel has a mosque-like pointed-archway entrance, while the grand lobby features lots of metal cutouts, floor-to-ceiling glass, and clusters of burnt-orange armchairs. More notable, however, are the stunning views of Kuah town and the Strait Of Malacca from rooms and the two outdoor pools with attractive mosaic tiling. Given that there's no alcohol served on-site, the atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful. #createwithtrip

Quiet, casual, and tucked away, the Ocean Residence Langkawi is a pleasant mid-range getaway. The lobby is located in a homey single-story building and features a couple of plush sofas and a coffee table with magazines fanned out on top, but it doesn't really inspire lingering. Far more inviting are the hotel's sprawling grounds, with lots of lush green space for running around plus three pools, one of which dips off an infinity edge into the vast ocean beyond. The resort caters to vacationing couples and families alike, and gets both Malaysian and international guests. The Ocean Residence Langkawi offers a huge selection of room types, including suites, villas, and converted shipping containers cleverly turned into rooms. Many of the higher-category rooms have ocean views and come with separate living rooms and kitchens. #createwithtrip

On the beachfront in the heart of Pantai Cenang sits the Mediterranean-style, two-story, terra-cotta roof tiled Casa del Mar, Spanish for "home by the sea." An arched wooden doorway leads to the charming lobby, which has a warm and inviting ambience, enhanced by its pitched wooden ceilings and ceramic-tile floors. The grounds have a Mediterranean vibe, with pathways that cut through tropical landscaping and suites with Spanish-style balconies and intricate ironwork on patio gates. At the back of the property, guests have direct access to a beautiful stretch of sand. The homey, intimate atmosphere and central location attract mostly couples and solo travelers. #createwithtrip
