#Japan Attractions The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge was once the largest suspension bridge in the world, with a length of 3,911 meters and a center span of 1,991 meters, spanning the Akashi Strait between Kobe City and Awaji Island in Hyōgo Prefecture. The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is part of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Project, which connects Honshu and Shikoku by road and rail. Work began in the area in May 1988 and it was opened to traffic on April 5, 1998. The bridge connects Osaka Bay and the Akashi Strait of the Seto Inland Sea. The strait is about 4 kilometers wide and has a maximum water depth of about 110 meters. The tides flowing through the strait are as high as 4.5 meters per second. There are many tourist areas on both sides of the Akashi Bridge, and there is also a sightseeing Ferris wheel at the highway service area on the Awaji Island side. The Ferris wheel in particular is a viewing point that should not be missed.
