The Tiger Leaping Gorge Scenic Area is located in Tiger Leaping Gorge Town, Shangri-La City, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It is one of the deepest canyons in the world and one of the ten most beautiful canyons in China. Tiger Leaping Gorge was called Yuemiegen Pass before the Yuan Dynasty. It was called Xueshanmenguan in the Yuan Dynasty, Hutiaojian in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and Hutiaotan in the Republic of China. Because tigers and leopards can jump over the narrowest part in one leap, it is named Tiger Leaping Gorge. In 1958, when the People's Commune was established, it was renamed Tiger Leaping Gorge and has been used ever since. In 1992, the scenic area opened to the public.
