It is known as one of the three major military academies, along with the Beiyang Army Academy (Tianjin) founded in 1906 and the Northeast Military Academy (Fengtian) founded in 1908. In 1935, the Yunnan Army Academy was reorganized into the "Central Army Officers School, Kunming Branch", with Long Yun serving as the director.
