Rokusonno Shrine: Kyoto’s Hidden Sakura Sanctuary

#cherryblossom25 Tucked away just southwest of Kyoto Station, Rokusonno Shrine offers a serene escape during cherry blossom season. Established in 963, this shrine honors Minamoto no Tsunemoto, the founder of the Seiwa Genji clan, and is one of the three Genji shrines in Japan .  From late March to mid-April, the shrine’s grounds transform into a floral haven. A variety of cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, weeping cherry, and the rare Ukon-zakura with its pale yellow blossoms, adorn the precincts . The approach to the shrine is particularly enchanting, lined with red toro lanterns and forming a picturesque cherry blossom tunnel .   A highlight is the Taiko Bridge, often referred to as the “Bridge of Love,” which gracefully arches over Shinryuike Pond. Crossing this bridge is said to bless visitors with good fortune in love and marriage . The combination of historic architecture, blooming sakura, and tranquil ambiance makes Rokusonno Shrine a perfect spot for a peaceful hanami experience.
