Local's Recommended Hidden Spot for Cherry Blossoms in Higashiyama: Shogunzuka Seiryu-den

If you're visiting Kyoto for cherry blossoms and want to avoid the crowds, here's a hidden gem in Higashiyama that locals highly recommend. In spring, you can enjoy cherry blossoms; in autumn, the vibrant maple leaves. Plus, you get a panoramic view of Kyoto city. This secret spot is none other than Shogunzuka Seiryu-den. "Shogunzuka" is located on Mount Hiei at an elevation of 200 meters. It was built during the Heian period by Emperor Kanmu to pray for the peace of the capital. The name comes from a 2.7-meter clay statue of a general wearing iron armor buried underground. Next to Shogunzuka stands the Goma Hall "Seiryu-den," which enshrines the national treasure—an image of the Blue Fudo Myo-o and Two Attendants from the mid-Heian period. In front of Seiryu-den, there's a magnificent weeping cherry tree. Its pink blossoms sway gracefully in the spring breeze, showcasing the beauty of the season. Beside Seiryu-den, you'll find a spacious stage and observation deck, offering a breathtaking view of Kyoto city. Along the way, there's also a strolling garden that incorporates elements of karesansui (dry landscape gardens). The garden is especially stunning during the cherry blossom season in spring and the maple leaf season in autumn.
