Mediterranean Italy La Maddalena Island

La Maddalena Island is located in the Mediterranean Sea about 2 kilometers northeast of Sardinia, Italy. Taking a ferry from Sardinia is the only option. On the east side of La Maddalena Island is Caprera Island. The two islands are connected by a causeway (Figure 3), which can be taken by car or on foot. It was an important naval supply station in Italy during World War II, but was later destroyed by Allied bombing. It was once the base of the U.S. Navy's Sixth Fleet and maintained permanent support facilities for nuclear submarines.
