Donghu is located in the urban area of Linhai, named for its proximity to the eastern side of the Taizhou Prefecture city wall, and was originally the confluence of several streams from Baiyun and Shangong to the north of the city. In the fourth year of the Xining reign of the Song Dynasty (1071), the prefect Qian Xuan excavated it into a lake. It is nearly 500 meters long from north to south and about 150 meters wide from east to west.
