Run by the National Trust, this neo-Norman fantasy isn’t your typical medieval castle. It’s a 19th-century marvel built with a striking combination of drama, detail, and decadence. From the moment I walked through its massive stone entrance, I knew I was somewhere truly extraordinary. The interior is jaw-dropping. Every room is more intricate than the last—carved ceilings, polished wood, and walls lined with fascinating art collections. But what made the biggest impact on me wasn’t just the architecture—it was the atmosphere. The castle tells complex stories, from immense wealth and Victorian innovation to the darker legacy of colonialism and the sugar trade. The National Trust does a thoughtful job presenting these layered histories, encouraging you to reflect while still being awed by the surroundings. What I loved most, though, were the views and the gardens. After touring the house, I stepped out into the sunshine and was met with sweeping views of the Menai Strait and Snowdonia in the distance. The gardens are beautifully kept yet wild enough to feel natural. I wandered down woodland paths and across lawns bursting with wildflowers. It felt peaceful and inspiring, a true escape into nature and history combined. Bonus tip: Penrhyn Castle is located just outside Bangor, Gwynedd (LL57 4HT), with great signage and ample parking. There’s a lovely café, a children’s play area, and plenty of picnic spots if you’re planning a full day out. If you're into railways, don't miss the Penrhyn Industrial Railway Museum on-site—it's a hidden gem for enthusiasts!
