Macau White Dove Park

The original site of the White Dove Park was the garden villa of Portuguese wealthy businessman Manuel Pereira, which was built in the 1770s. It was once rented to the Macao branch of the British East India Company, and was later sold to another Portuguese tycoon, Maquis, as his residence. Ma Kuishi liked to raise white pigeons. As a large number of white pigeons roosted on the eaves, it looked like a pigeon nest from a distance, hence the name. Another of Macquarie's favorites is the Portuguese poet Luis de Camões, so he placed some items related to the poet in the park. According to legend, the poet completed part of the famous Portuguese epic "The Soul of Portugal" in a cave here. Now, every June 10th, the Portuguese community in Macau goes to the cave to lay flowers and recite "The Soul of Portugal" in commemoration (this ceremony was still maintained after Macau's return, but the Portuguese national anthem was not played). In 1885, the property was purchased by the Portuguese Macau government and became a garden open to the public. The residential building was converted into the Camões Museum in 1920.
