Kainan Shrine, the guardian deity of the Miura Peninsula's main shrine - a port town with a vibrant history and culture

Kainan Shrine, located in Misaki, Miura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, was founded in 982 (Tengen 5) and is the guardian deity of the Miura Peninsula. Its main deity, Fujiwara no Sukemitsu, is said to have been shipwrecked here during the Heian period and devoted himself to suppressing pirates and developing the fishing industry. The shrine grounds are home to a large 800-year-old ginkgo tree said to have been donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo, as well as a shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Miura, and attract many worshippers.
