Okinawa｜Worth the Journey: The Beauty of the Kuroshio Current at Churaumi Aquarium

After the 1975 International Ocean Exposition, Okinawa built its first aquarium. It underwent a major renovation in 2002, resulting in the current design we see today. The exhibition focuses on the Kuroshio Current, showcasing marine life from shallow waters to the deep sea, from whale sharks to coral reefs. The use of light projection in the tanks creates mesmerizing light and shadow effects. This visit comes a decade after my last one. Although I’ve visited other aquariums in Japan during this time, the curatorial approach here is unique. Churaumi Aquarium emphasizes the ecosystem around Okinawa, making the experience feel more intimate and relatable. One highlight is the massive Kuroshio Sea tank, where you can see an 8.6-meter-long whale shark and manta rays gracefully swimming together. Whether you’re relaxing on a chair in the viewing area or enjoying an immersive experience in the dining zone, the sight is truly moving. Additionally, there’s a Sea Turtle Hall and a Manatee Hall, where you can observe these creatures up close and appreciate their adorable behaviors. If you’re not driving, it’s recommended to stay overnight in Nago.
