Peace, Reflection & Rose Ice Cream: A Memorable Visit to Nagasaki Peace Park

Visiting Nagasaki Peace Park was one of the most meaningful experiences of our trip. The park is a powerful tribute to the victims of the atomic bombing, but also a beautifully designed space dedicated to peace, remembrance, and hope. At the heart of the park is the iconic Peace Statue, with one hand pointing skyward to warn against nuclear destruction, and the other stretched outward in a gesture of calm and peace. Surrounding the statue are memorials and sculptures gifted by countries around the world, each expressing their vision of peace. It’s humbling to see global solidarity in such a symbolic space. As we wandered through the park, we found ourselves naturally slowing down to reflect. The nearby Peace Bell and Fountain of Peace added to the emotional impact—simple, elegant, and moving tributes that invite quiet thought. And here’s an unexpected highlight—right next to the Peace Statue, there’s a small ice cream vendor selling soft serve shaped like a rose. Not only was it beautifully crafted, but it tasted amazing too. It felt a bit surreal to enjoy something so delicately made in such a solemn place, but somehow it added a gentle, sweet pause to an otherwise heavy moment.
