The Ato Matsuri Yamahoko Procession held at the Gion Festival in Kyoto in 2022.

Kyoto is currently in the middle of the 2023 Gion Festival! Last year, I visited some of the rituals and events that take place over a month and have a tradition of over 1,100 years. I went to Kyoto last week, but the atmosphere seemed to be drifting around the city, with only lanterns and other decorations visible. I had no knowledge of the Gion Festival at all, so I just followed everyone to the places they visited, but the traffic restrictions were severe and it was a large-scale and attractive festival. Last year, I had the opportunity to see the return of Takayama, which had disappeared during the Edo period and become a rest mountain, for the first time in 196 years for the Ato Matsuri Yamahoko Procession. The main street was filled with many people. It was impressive to see them walking around the streets of Kyoto. It is easy to get information about the Gion Festival on websites and brochures, so please check them out.
