Nasu Highlands, Tochigi Prefecture, Killing Stone

The Killing Stone is a legendary site where a nine-tailed fox that came to Japan 800 years ago was defeated and turned into stone. It is said to have been named after the poisonous gas it emits that kills people and animals. The site was also visited by Matsuo Basho, who also appears in Oku no Hosomichi, and a stone monument with a haiku poem on it has been erected here.
