Nikko Toshogu Shrine is a shrine located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, in the northern Kanto region of Japan. It enshrines Toshogu Daigongen, the deified Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate, as its main deity, and serves as the head shrine of all Toshogu shrines throughout Japan. It is counted as one of the three major Toshogu shrines, along with Kunozan Toshogu Shrine and Ueno Toshogu Shrine. The shrine grounds contain 55 buildings, including eight national treasures and 34 important cultural properties. The gorgeous sculptures, such as the "Sleeping Cat" and the "Three Wise Monkeys," are a must-see.
