Tokugawa's Grave: Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Nikko Toshogu Shrine is a shrine in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture, dedicated to Tosho Daigongen, the deified Tokugawa Ieyasu. Its architecture, sculptures, and decorations from the early Edo period are a must-see. Built in 1617, it was carefully maintained and renovated by the Edo Shogunate in accordance with Ieyasu's will. The main attraction of Toshogu Shrine is the gorgeous Yomeimon Gate. It is decorated with vividly colored carvings on a white and gold base, and there are more than 500 carvings. In addition, the famous sculpture of the Three Wise Monkeys represents the teachings of see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil, and tell the story of human growth. The Sleeping Cat is also a must-see, said to have been made by the master craftsman Hidari Jingorō, and is considered a symbol of a peaceful era.
