The Obuse chestnuts were originally transplanted from Tanba Province in the early Ashikaga period. Their flavor gained a reputation and they were presented to the Edo Shogunate, but as the haiku poet Kobayashi Issa wrote, "The size of the chestnuts that cannot be picked up is magnificent," they were not available to the common people. Shosendo's chestnuts are recommended as a souvenir from Obuse. They are particular about the rich flavor of Obuse chestnuts and grow the raw chestnuts in their own garden. When I visited the store, it was located alone in a chestnut grove. The packaging and name of this bite-sized yokan are very eye-catching, and it is a chestnut made by putting a whole chestnut inside a lightly salted red bean yokan. The sweetness was elegant and very good. It is a little far from the downtown area, but I definitely recommend you go there at least once. There are a variety of unique chestnut sweets lined up.
