Ushitora Shrine in Onomichi: Filming Location of 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time'

Onomichi is home to a shrine that filmmakers love to use as a location. 'The Girl Who Leapt Through Time' and 'Two People' were both filmed here, and the anime 'Kamisama Kiss' also features this shrine. Ushitora Shrine is actually the oldest shrine in Onomichi, founded in 806 AD, giving it a history of over 1200 years. The shrine enshrines Izanagi, Amaterasu, and Susanoo. Izanagi is considered the origin of Japanese mythology and is known as the father god, being the father of Amaterasu and Susanoo. As you enter the torii gate, you can feel the solemnity. In the front yard stands a giant camphor tree that has been here for 900 years. The tree's trunk has a circumference of seven meters, and its lush canopy covers the entire Ushitora Shrine like a giant hand. In front of the shrine, there is also another shrine, Kanayamahiko Shrine, which enshrines Kanayamahiko.
