The Carmo Cathedral is also called Nossa Senhora do Carmo. The cathedral, which combines Baroque and Rococo styles, was started in 1756 by the architect Jose Figueiredo and was completed in 1768. The front façade has a sculpture of Santa Ana, and the sides are lined with large azulejo panels suggesting Carmel and Mount Carmel. The work was done by Silvestre Silvestri, and the paintings were painted by Carlos Branco. The tile work is said to have been done in 1912 at the Senhora do Alam, Torringha factory in Vila Nova de Gaia. There is a beautiful chapel space decorated with gold inside.
