1. Accommodation The best hotels in Sandakan are similar to budget hotels. We stayed at the Sandakan Hotel and Elopura Hotel. The Elopura Hotel was a good experience, so you can choose according to your needs. 2. Food 1. Sandakan City: Try the Three Soups for lunch. We ordered laksa, beef rice, and Portuguese egg tarts for MYR 382. For dinner, we recommend Sim Sim 90. The salted egg yolk crab, fried squid, and fried fish tofu are delicious, but the price is high. This meal cost MYR 1,002. Don't miss the slingshot noodles and century egg dumplings the next morning. On the last night, we had dinner at Bistro 88, and their teh tarik is highly recommended. 2. Lodge: Three meals are buffet style, with tea and coffee available all day. There is fruit at every meal, and you can enjoy mangosteen freely. 3. Attractions 1. Sandakan Heritage Trail: You can take this route in the afternoon. There is a map, and you can check in at the ancient buildings one by one, like a treasure hunt. 2. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre: Not particularly interesting, but if you are interested in orangutans, you can take a look. 3. Around the lodge: This is the highlight. There are a total of 5 boat trips, 4 of which are included in the price, and 1 is a self-funded night tour. You can see different animals at different times: 5pm for proboscis monkeys (about 1 hour), 8pm for sleeping birds (about 1 hour), 6am the next day for pygmy elephants (2.5 hours), 4pm the next day for orangutans (2 hours), and 6am the third day for crocodiles (2 hours). There are professional English guides to explain animal knowledge, but whether you can see orangutans, pygmy elephants, and crocodiles depends on luck. On the last day, you can go to Gomantong Cave, which has cockroaches and bats. After exiting the cave, you can climb the stairs to overlook the Sukau rainforest. The lodge has two small swimming pools, a bar, and a rainforest trail at the back. It takes about 20 minutes to walk the whole way, and there may be wild animals. There is also a 1-hour orangutan lecture every afternoon. At the end of the trip, the guide will take you to the RDC Rainforest Discovery Centre. 4. Climate and Temperature The average temperature during the trip is about 25–30°C, which is generally hot and humid. Remember to take sun protection and mosquito repellent measures. 5. Reminders 1. The Sandakan Hotel has Wi-Fi, but the lodge only has Wi-Fi in public areas, and there is no signal in the rooms. 2. Follow the guide's arrangements when playing in the rainforest, do not leave the group without permission, and pay attention to your own safety, as there are wild animals. 3. Pay attention to safety when taking a boat and take care of your personal belongings.
