Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the Galicia Autonomous Region of Spain. According to legend, James the Great, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, was buried here, making it a pilgrimage site for Catholics. It was listed as a World Cultural Heritage in 1985. This famous pilgrimage site became an important symbol of Spanish Christianity's opposition to Islam. The ancient city was severely destroyed by Muslims in the late 10th century AD, but was completely rebuilt in the 11th century.
