Hohenschwangau Castle: A Fairytale World in Southern Germany

Hohenschwangau Castle, also known as the Old Swan Castle or High Swan Castle, is located in the village of Hohenschwangau in the town of Schwangau, Bavaria, Germany. It stands across the mountain from the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. The name "Hohenschwangau" translates to "High Swan Castle," where "High" (Hohen) signifies nobility rather than altitude. King Ludwig II of Bavaria, often referred to as the "Fairytale King," was a passionate builder of castles. Unfortunately, his royal status limited his artistic pursuits, making him a dreamer whose artistic ambitions were overshadowed by political responsibilities. Although the path leading to the castle is uphill, the walk feels leisurely and not tiring at all. The creamy yellow structure accompanies visitors along the way. Perched on a high vantage point, the castle offers stunning views of the surrounding lakes. While it is more understated compared to the grandeur of Neuschwanstein Castle, Hohenschwangau Castle is still a fairytale destination that should not be missed.
